Sophie Honess, Hazels Stone's

  • Weswal Gallery 192 Brisbane Street East Tamworth, NSW, 2340 Australia (map)

Sophie Honess is a Gomeroi woman living and working in Tamworth NSW. Practising art with fibres, Sophie weaves, embroiders and tufts.

“Hazels Stone’s” is a body of work referencing stones collected from Gomeroi country by a dear lady named Hazel. During the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, Hazel took long bush walks and would collect stones she found in the rivers to later cut and polish.  Sophie was given some of these stones by local fibre artist Sybil Orr, Hazels daughter.

In response, Sophie has created a series of fibre artworks, studying each stone closely and finding colours, components and compositions that are otherwise blind to the eye at a single glance. Looking at these rocks with a magnifier we can see the beauty Hazel unveiled, the harmony and fractious nature of each stone being in itself a work of art.
