JOANNE STEAD

Joanne Stead is a self-taught artist based in Tamworth, NSW. Describing herself as a “mum, artist and life enthusiast,” she recognises and draws on everyday magic in her artmaking.

A diverse artist, Joanne works across mediums including scraperboard, acrylics, linocut and mosaics, with works depicting a range of subjects from her own experience and imagination. Her most recent collections reflect her concerns about climate change and have focused on local threatened species and habitat loss in an effort to spark local action on the issues.

A founding member of the Tamworth Regional Art Collective, Joanne has experience developing a range of public art projects, including a number of murals and three large mosaic installations. Her artworks are described as unique, whimsical and striking, and will stir and inspire art lovers from all walks of life.

My last year has been one characterised by personal challenges, with a number of big life changes and subsequent, steep learning curves to navigate. This collection, A Touch of Gold, has been about remaining connected to the things around me that glimmer in amongst the chaos.

Australian native plants and birds seem to always become a theme throughout my works and here they are again! These are the things that bring me endless amounts of joy, and many of them in my own backyard. I hope that the images will resonate with audiences as familiar comforts and examples of the everyday magic in each of our lives.
