Phoebe Hillard

The rubble of the forest floor has always fascinated me with its endless and diverse beauty. Every time I walk in a forest I spend the majority of the time studying the ground along the paths where I find as much beauty in the micro as I do in the views around me. The rich colours, textures and layers telling a story of growth, life and decay. Every single piece of debris in its place because of a thousand reasons and none. Detritus to me captures a sense of peace in the erratic and beauty in the chaos.
The works in this exhibition are created from photographs. Each artwork is soft pastel, a medium I love for its tactile nature. The level of detail in the works is an acknowledgement to the journey of the singular amongst the many in its contribution to the whole. In nature there is an indifference to this journey that invokes in me a sense of calm about my place in the world.
The works in this exhibition have been developed across the seasons from many a walk through the Australian bush around the Northern Tablelands. It is a place a I go to feel connected to nature and a feel a sense of home.
